Where HAVE I been since I got back to work from my leave?
I have been traveling back and forth to Zambales for the past few weeks cooking up a story. Been talking to DepEd officials and various sponsors. I've been driving around Metro Manila, from the posh villages in the south to bliss housing in QC to pick up second hand computers. Been learning about processors and learning suites and video cards and mother... boards. I have spending my past four Sundays freezing in the editing bay. I have been praying week after week for a successful turnout of THIS.
Happy Computer, the latest project of Ako Ang Simula. |
Happy Computer, is the newest of Ako Ang Simula's many public service projects. With DepEd's help, our target is to provide computer units to public elementary schools without computers. What makes the project freakishly challenging more amazing is that we get these computers solely from donations.
Just last week we awarded the first batch of computers to our first recipient, San Juan Elementary School in San Antonio, Zambales. Since it was the pilot of our Happy Computer segments, it took almost a month of production and the emo in me just can't help but feel attached to my subjects. It was like giving birth to a community all over again.:) The excitement on the students faces when they saw our truck parking and my boys started unloading the computer boxes. The smiles and hurrahs of the kids when they entered their computer lab for the first time. Their wide-eyed, slack-jawed, sweaty laughing faces as they laid their hands on their brand new computers.
The experience is priceless. These past few weeks I realized that I do have a knack for doing stories/projects related to children and education. I think because with kids there's so much hope. There's still so much you can do to change their lives. To break the cycle of poverty, of indifference, of hopelessness. I know I'm being too idealistic, but I think giving good quality education to children is an investment for our society's future.
I think I'm seriously scared I might switch careers and become a social worker before the year ends. Haha!
Anyway, after our first awarding I'm all still up to my neck working on our next recipients. I thought I would be able to take at least a few days off, but if you really want a project to fly, I guess you have be hands on the whole thing the whole time. I'm just really thankful for the tremendous support the project's been getting.:)
Le sigh. Beach. Vacation. Weekend getaway. Out of town trips. PNR. Tagaytay dinner. We shall see each other soon. For now it's another working Sunday for moi. :)
'Til next post!
