Surf, sand and washboard abs hanging around. Planned to get stoked and get lazy on one laid-back beach weekend.
Finally, I was able to kiss hello the sands of Baler.
But on a busy weekday.
In a van stuffed with the crew, my host and myself. And instead of donning the surfboard, I was carrying a tripod and reflector along the shore in my beach dress.
I was in Sabang, Baler for Ako Ang Simula's feature on Coast Thru Life - a group of sun kissed surfers based in Manila, who share the love for the waves, the ocean and all the adventure in between.
Self-proclaimed ambassadors of good vibes, they coast different surf spots in the country- often in San Juan, La Union and Sabang, Baler- to appreciate and promote the great waves we have in here in the Philippines. And to spread the love for surfing to locals, urbanites, and foreigners alike.
But their surf movement (not to mention those bods that could land on EDSA billboards anytime), isn't the only reason why we're featuring them. Last year, Coast Thru Life tied up with foreign surf groups The Surf Institute and Zamora Surf in a project that provides free water filters to communities/schools with no potable water.
And where's the best place to start the project than in their own playgrounds.
Here's a peek at our shoot with the boys and girls of Coast Thru Life and the impact they and other surfers are making in the poor communities in the country.
Oh did I mention that actor, singer and TV host Jericho Rosales is part of Coast Thru life?:)

Our host, Atty. Pochoy Labog finds out how surfing changes one's lifestyle and life from Echo and Buji. |
Echo goofing around with local kids- one of them could be the next Pinoy surf champ. |
After the beach, we headed to Ruperto Zubia Elementary School, one of the recipients of Clean Drinking Water Philippines.
(L-R) Pochoy, Buji, CTL's Nikki dela Paz, Aliya Surf Camp's Roy Angara, CTL's Kim Jones and Echo, with elementary students. |

These guys' mantra may be to ride the waves and give out good vibes. But in their quest to spread the love for surfing, they didn't simply coast thru life. They made, and continue to make, their own waves of change one community at a time.
Get stoked. Be inspired. Watch Coast Thru Life's story in Ako Ang Simula on ABS-CBN this October 3.

PS: Used retro filters in this post's photos, bit by CTL's throwback 60's bug. :)
In fairness, naka-beach dress ka nang buhatin ang tripod ;)
